Photographing child models

Never work with children or animals, they say, but sometimes you don’t have a choice. Here are some top tips for getting great shots of child models in the studio.

Take your time to get them to relax

Chances are, the moment you pull out the camera, the first thing most children will do is to pull the cheesiest
smile they can. They can’t help it, it’s what they’ve been conditioned to do. But you probably don’t want any fake smiles, you want real, natural smiles, or some other genuine expression. Be prepared to give them some time to get past that and relax, to the point that they begin to explore and show their true colours…

Be ready

Then you have to be ready to pounce and get the picture you need, right when the moment arises, because it will be gone in no time.

Get down to a child’s perspective

It’s no good looming over them at adult height, you need to get down to their level, and if that means crawling around on your hands and knees, then so be it. Hopefully  crawling around will make them laugh at you too – added bonus!
